Overview

Background

Currently, WebAdvisor is missing some useful data fields for courses.  The District Coordinating Educational Council has recommended creating a process to begin filling in those fields with a goal of having the system ready for the start of Fall Registration.   Our district Information Systems department is working to upload certain fields from Colleague directly into WedAdvisor, such as instructor name, email, and bookstore link.  However, we need department chairs to create SHORT, 2-3 sentences we are calling “course blurbs” that will appear in the “Course Description” field on the course registration pages.  Here is an example of a “course blurb” for Basic Keyboarding (CSIS-100-0365):

“A course in beginning keyboarding techniques.  Emphasis will be placed on the development of speed and accuracy.” 

Please be aware that keeping the blurbs short is a key feature, both for ease of student course browsing and because extended descriptions interfere with the ability to see a complete course listing without having to scroll up and down on the page.

Departments unique to colleges:

Department chairs of courses that are unique to either Grossmont or Cuyamaca college (i.e. Computer Science Information Systems) need to submit their “blurbs” online as soon as the sentences are ready.

Departments with offerings are both campuses:

For courses that are offered at both campuses, the chairs at Grossmont and Cuyamaca need to work together to create a shared “course blurb” for each course.  Once both chairs agree, then the “course blurbs” may be submitted online.

Support of a writer:

For any chairs that would like assistance writing the blurbs, we have identified writers who may be used to create draft versions for chairs to edit and approve.  For assistance on joint courses, please agree in advance on which writer you will use so there is no duplication of efforts.  If a chair is interested in utilizing the support of a writer, please contact Shannon Cadagan at Shannon.Cadagan@gcccd.edu or 619-644-7736.

Submitting Online

Once a “course blurb” is approved, the chair must go to:

http://intranet.gcccd.edu/blurbs 

Then fill out the form information including Course Title, Course Section Number, and the newly approved “course blurb” for each course you want to be updated. 

Once the “course blurb” has been submitted online, it will be added to the list to be uploaded into WebAdvisor on an on-going basis.
